Josh Hamilton Drunk Photos

Josh Hamilton admitted that he suffered a lapse from his sobriety in January and that the photos posted on deadspin

Are indeed him in an Arizona bar drinking and carrying on with women who aren’t his wife. He had gone to Arizona before spring training to prepare for the season at Athletes’ Performance Institute in Tempe, Ariz.

No disciplinary action will be taken by the Rangers, who were told about the incident by Hamilton the day after it happened. Hamilton is in the lineup today. He has not failed a drug test, so while he doesn’t remember all the details from that night, it’s apparent that he didn’t take any banned substances that would lead to a suspension from MLB in violation of the policy that allowed him to return to baseball.

“I’m embarrassed about it. For the Rangers, I’m embarrassed about it. For my wife, my kids,” Hamilton said. “It’s one of those things that just reinfornces about alcohol. Unfortunately, it happened. It just reinforces to me that if I’m out there getting ready for a season and taking my focus off the most important thing in my recovery, which is my relationship with Christ, it’s amazing how those things creep back in.

“Honestly, I hate that this happened. But it is what it is. You deal with it. I realized that, obviously, I’m not perfect, in this on-going struggle, battle, that is very real. A lot of people don’t understand how real it is.

“As soon as it happened, I called my support system — my wife, the Rangers, MLB and told them what had happened. I was absolutely open and honest about it.

“I went to get something to eat. Obviously, I eat at restaurants that have bars in them all the time. I wasn’t mentally fit to go in there, spiritually fit, and it just crossed my mind, ‘Can I have a drink?’ Obviously, I can’t.”

Hamilton said he was surprised that it took so long for word to spread that he had been spotted drunk in public. General manager Jon Daniels said a cloud hung over those who were contacted by Hamilton for about a week.

Hamilton also said that he doesn’t feel like a hypocrite for preaching about sobriety and the importance of having a relationship with Jesus Christ.

“I don’t feel like I’m a hypocrite. I feel like I’m human,” he said. “I got away from the one thing that keeps me straightened out and going in the right direction.”

Mark Lester

LONDON —A British tabloid reported Saturday that the godfather of Michael Jackson’s three children claims to be the father of the singer’s daughter Paris.
The News of the World quotes Jackson’s longtime friend Mark Lester as saying that he “gave Michael my sperm so that he could have kids — and I believe Paris is my daughter.”
The newspaper also quotes Lester, is a 51-year-old former child star known for his lead role in the 1968 movie version of the state show “Oliver!” as saying he’s willing to take a paternity test.
In a video interview with Lester broadcast on the News of the World Web site, Lester said he donated his sperm at a London clinic. He said Jackson was married to Debbie Rowe at the time.
“She’s the birth mother of the children so I naturally assumed the sperm donation would obviously have gone into Debbie and Debbie would have borne the children,” he said.
He said Paris resembled his own 15-year-old daughter Harriet.
Rowe said he had made the revelations because he has “concerns about the welfare and upbringing of the children.”
“It’s a contact issue,” he said on the video. “I dearly want to remain in contact with those kids and I feel now this is the only way I can ensure that.”
Jackson and Lester became friends 27 years ago when Jackson’s manager told Lester the singer wanted to meet him. Lester lives in Cheltenham, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of London.
Calls to Lester’s home were not immediately returned.

Katie Price

Katie Price a.k.a Jordan has become tired of cage fighter Alex Reid, whom she started seeing after parting ways with husband Peter Andre, it has emerged.

She reportedly told her friends: “He`s getting on my t**s. I`m sick of him acting like a lap dog. He`s been a distraction and he was fun while he lasted but he`s not good for me and now I feel ready to move on.”A friend of the hottie has revealed that she is worried that her relationship with the small time actor and her estranged husband’s criticism for her insensible behaviour would harm her public image.

“She`s frightened about looking like a s***. She`s been stung by Peter`s criticism and wants to try to focus on being a mum and trying to protect her reputation from any more blows,” the News of the World quoted the pal as saying.

In fact, Jordan wanted to end her still young relationship with Reid, while they were in Spain.

“This has always been about companionship for her, not a serious relationship. But it quickly escalated. She wanted to end it in Marbella and is worried Alex has started to get stars – and pound signs – in his eyes,” the pal said.

Moreover, she reportedly banned her film crew from travelling with them to Spain because she did not want Alex to appear much in her hit ITV2 show.

And she has allegedly started making secret late night calls to her former holiday flame Anthony Lowther.

The insider added: “Jordan feels Alex has pretty much served his purpose and she is worried people are starting to think they are a long-term prospect. She has a real soft spot for Anthony. He is everything she is looking for – hunky, gentle, and loving.

“Funnily enough, these are the qualities she fell for in Pete. She still really fancies Anthony.

“He`s the one she really wants to be with – and I suspect it won`t be long before she is. Katie has started distancing herself from Alex in the last few days because of that.”

That's Life: Sour Sounds of Summer Construction
The morning air is cool so I have opened all the windows in my condo unit, and the sweet sound of birds chirping caresses my ears.

But soon, whatever the weather, I will keep the windows shut in an attempt to prevent the noise of construction from assailing my ears.

I was not shocked when the board of trustees announced at the annual condo meeting in July that a construction project would be undertaken; I suspected a couple of weeks earlier that something sinister was afoot as I had observed surveyors planting stakes on the property.

An engineer, hired by the condominium board, explained at the meeting that all previous measures to prevent rain water and ground water from invading the basements and subsequently causing window wells and stairs to rot and collapse had proven ineffective. So a new plan, which involves excavation and construction, has been devised to solve the drainage problem.

As much as I dread hearing the words assessment and construction uttered at a condo meeting, I will have to bear both if I want to continue living in my unit.

Thankfully, I will not need to empty my savings account to pay the assessment levied on unit owners to defray the cost of the project. I would prefer, however, spending that money on "Just because I love you" gifts for my grandchildren and perhaps something for myself - a new dress, a digital camera. But woe is me, all I actually will have to show for my money is a canceled check.

I asked a few questions of the board members, with reference to the project, but only one brought a laugh. "If the noise is unbearable, will you put me up at the Orchard's?"
It may seem that I am overreacting to the situation, but I am haunted by memories of virtually being driven from the house in New York where my husband and I had lived contentedly for 20 years.

Then the "powers that be" decided the Long Island Expressway should be expanded, which would bring it close to our home. The rat-a-tat of pneumatic drills was disturbing, but dynamite ignited to blow up boulders not only created a deafening noise but jarred us from our bed as well.

The first time it happened, I cried out, "It's an earthquake"

My husband calmed me, momentarily, saying, "No, they're just blasting." It was only 6 a.m., and my husband suggested I get back in bed.

But, I thought, OK it's not a natural disaster, it's JUST a manmade one - either way I want to get out of here. Not long after that we put our house on the market.

Since moving to the condo in Williamstown, I have suffered through a few projects. Beside assessments, I incurred another expense - the money I spent in order to escape from the noise by shopping or going to a movie and eating lunch out. How many dresses, pairs of shoes can a woman buy in the time it takes workmen to replace decks on a condominium or to repair the roof, you ask? Well, I can only speak for myself: "As many as it takes to keep me out of the house from 9 to 4 p.m."

It has been my experience that workers begin hammering, drilling, sawing and blaring their radios first thing in the morning, but since I am unable to function before I eat breakfast, I am trapped at home until I gulp cereal, tea and toast and then dress.
One Friday during the period that decks were being replaced, I read a book and snacked until 2 a.m., thinking that, at least, on Saturday we would be blessed with the sound of silence and be able to sleep in.

Saturday morning, my husband I were awakened by a racket that turned our home into a torture chamber. I threw a raincoat over my nightgown and marched outside to see what was happening. On our patio, I saw a hefty worker using a cement saw cutter and slicing the patio as if it were butter. "You shouldn't be doing that now," I said. "The notice we received said work on the patios would not begin until Monday."

"I was ordered to trim the patios today and that's what I'm going to do," the man said. I trudged to the bathroom, swallowed two aspirin and stuffed my ears with cotton.

If I believed in reincarnation, I would take comfort in picturing myself returning as an old-time American Indian. I would live in a wigwam, where there would be no roof to re-shingle, no driveway to resurface, no decks to replace and no basements in which water would collect.

Ivanov looks be slowing down a great deal. Overhand right from Fujita misses. Straight left from Ivanov lands. Left uppercut from Ivanov answered by a right from Fujita. Right hand from Ivanov. The action has slowed considerably. Right from Fujita as he continues to stalk Ivanov. They clinch in the corner and Ivanov separates with some wild hooks that miss. Left jabs from Fujita followed by a clinch along the ropes. Fujita gets in a few short shots against the ropes. Ivanov answers with some wild shots as they finally begin to exchange. More short uppercuts from Fujita as they end the round clinching along the ropes.

Round 3: Both fighters start the final round with their respective jabs. Fujita shoots in for a double as they get pinned against the ropes. He is unable to secure the takedown as the ref separates them. As the bout restarts Ivanov throws a left and again Fujita shoots. Ivanov stuffs it and then throws a hard kick. Combo from Ivanov misses. Ivanov follows it up with a body kick. Left from Ivanov misses. Good body kick from Ivanov as Fujita continues to move forward. Right jab from Ivanov as Fujita lunges in with two rights. Straight left from Ivanov. One, two from Ivanov misses as Fujita shoots and puts Ivanov on his back. The ref pauses the action to restart them away from the ropes. Fujita attempts to work from half guard a he tries locking up an arm triangle. Very little action as Fujita tries passing. Fight comes to an end with Fujita in half guard.

Justin Bieber Dead

This just in: Justin Bieber commits suicide and Sarah Palin seeking divorce from Todd Palin. What's wrong with this picture? Both stories appear to be hoaxes.

First: The web has lit up today with the rumor that on July 31st Justin Bieber committed suicide at the age of 15. These reports are citing TMZ.com although there is no evidence that TMZ published such a story.

There has also been no comment from Bieber's family about the incident. Bieber was launched into the spotlight ever since becoming a star on youtube at age 12.

Second: Sarah Palin Divorce rumors are circulating the internet. Sarah and Todd Palin are not planning a divorce. People just cannot seem to leave this woman alone

Palin's spokeswoman has reponded: There is no truth to the recent "story" (and story is the correct term for this type of fiction) that the Palins are divorcing."

Pull Out Soldiers

Bangladesh has decided to pull out troops from the south-eastern hill region, 12 years after signing a peace deal with tribal insurgents.

A brigade of troops comprising of three infantry battalions and 35 security camps will be withdrawn from the Chittagong Hill Tracts, officials say.

They say this will be the “biggest army withdrawal” from the area ever since the peace deal in 1997.

More than 8,500 troops and rebels were killed during the 20-year insurgency.

The rebels or the Shanti Bahini were fighting for greater autonomy in the mineral-rich Chittagong Hill Tracts, and to force the expulsion of Bengali-speaking immigrants, who were encouraged by successive governments to settle in tribal areas.

“The troop withdrawal will start immediately and all the 35 camps under three infantry brigades will be completely wound up by end-September,” a defence ministry statement said.

“This is the biggest army withdrawal from the area after the accord was signed,” the statement said.

Reports in the Bangladeshi media say that over 300 security camps in the area will remain after the first phase of withdrawal – they are expected to be pulled out in phases.

The government had given a general amnesty to tribal insurgents in the Chittagong Hill Tracts who surrender their weapons after the peace treaty.

Former Iranian President Khatami Criticised on Trial

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has criticised the trial of people accused of violence after June’s disputed presidential election.

Mr Khatami’s website said the “show trial” would damage confidence in Iran’s Islamic establishment.

More than 100 people went on trial on Saturday, including several leading reformists, on charges including rioting, vandalism, and conspiracy.

The poll was won by incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.

‘Against constitution’

On Mr Khatami’s website he expressed hope that Saturday’s trial would not “lead to ignorance of the real crimes.
The reformist Mr Khatami was president from 1997 to 2005.

The BBC’s Kasra Naji says the timing and scale of the trial came as a surprise and suggests Iran’s leadership wants to send a message to stop any more protests.

The AFP news agency quotes Mr Khatami as making more outspoken criticism of the trial.

“What was done yesterday is against the constitution, regular laws and rights of the citizens,” his office quoted him as saying.

“The most important problem with the trial procedure is that it was not held in an open session. The lawyers and the defendants were not informed of the contents of the cases ahead of the trial.”

Some of the defendants told the court their earlier claims of fraud during the 12 June poll were baseless, official media said.

But Iran’s largest reformist party, Mosharekat, dismissed the court appearance as a “show trial” and said the confessions had been forced.

‘Real winner’

Photos from the packed courtroom showed seated defendants wearing prison uniforms with guards next to them.

The defendants included supporters of opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi and aides of Mr Khatami.

Many protesters insisted that Mr Mousavi was the real winner of the 12 June election.

The semi-official Fars news agency reported that former deputy foreign minister Mohsen Aminzadeh, former government spokesman Abdollah Ramazanzadeh, former senior lawmaker Mohsen Mirdamadi and former Industry Minister Behzad Nabavi were among those on trial.

Foreign media, including the BBC, have been restricted in their coverage of Iran since the election protests turned into confrontations with the authorities in which at least 30 people were killed.

Opposition groups alleged widespread vote-rigging. Post-election protests saw the largest mass demonstrations in Iran since the 1979 revolution, which brought about the current Islamic system of government.

President Zardari Takes Serious Notice of Gojra Incidents

ISLAMABAD: Taking serious notice of Gojra incidents, President Asif Ali Zardari has directed the concerned authorities to ensure restoration of law and order.

The president has also directed federal minister for minority affairs Shahbaz Bhatti to remain in Gojra to supervise the arrangements until the normalization of the situation.

President’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that President Zardari has expressed grave concern over the incidents of Gojra.

The President said that nobody will be allowed to take law in hand.

He directed federal minister for minority affairs Shahbaz Bhatti to remaining Gojra until the situation becomes normal and also asked him to take steps for the security of people’s life and property.

Car Blast in Iraq, 5 killed

BAGHDAD: Iraqi police say at least five people have been killed and 20 others wounded in a car bombing in a mainly Sunni area northwest of Baghdad.

A police officer says the explosives-laden car was parked near sidewalk vendors at an outdoor market in Haditha. The officer gave the casualty toll on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release the information.

Sunday’s attack is the latest in a series of blasts that have raised concerns about the ability of Iraqi forces to protect the population as U.S. troops prepare to withdraw by the end of 2011.

Haditha is in Anbar province, which was one of the most dangerous areas in Iraq until Sunni tribal leaders joined forces with the U.S. military to fight al Qaeda in Iraq.

The Devil Wears Prada

Lauren Weisberger's bestseller comes to life on the silver screen.

"The Devil Wears Prada," based on the Lauren Weisberger best-selling novel of the same title, is a clever comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. Meryl Streep's character, the devil-like Editor-in-Chief of Runway, an elite fashion magazine, hires new assistant Andrea (Hathaway), who is intelligent but is not a size 0 and lacks style. Streep's character has a blast sending Andy on all sorts of errands, from grabbing a latte, to trying to find the 7th Harry Potter book, which wasn't even out yet!

Streep does an Oscar-worthy performance as this Cruella-type character. This movie highlights her talent as an actress. Other big names in the movie are Stanley Tucci as Streep's second-in-command as well as Emily Blunt as the overworked and underpaid first assistant, Simon Baker as a sexy writer and lastly Adrian Grenier as Andy's chef-in-training boyfriend. All of the characters bring a laugh-out-loud touch to this film.

"The Devil Wears Prada" is a movie that is so good, you can watch it over and over again and still laugh the same way you did the first time. It features wonderful actors as well as wonderful direction.

"The Devil Wears Prada" is available on DVD.

US-ENTERTAINMENT Summary

Newly discovered Mozart works played in Austria

SALZBURG, Austria (Reuters) - An Austrian pianist performed two newly discovered pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for the first time in public on Sunday in a house where the master composer once lived. The concerto movement and a prelude were originally judged by their archivist, the International Mozarteum Foundation, to be anonymous works. Further analysis determined they had been composed by Mozart when he was 7- or 8-years-old.

Film "The Cove" seeks to expose dolphin killings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A tense new film shows Japanese fishermen luring thousands of wild dolphins into a hidden secret cove in Japan where activists say they are captured for marine amusement parks or slaughtered for food. "The Cove" follows a team of activists including former dolphin trainer from the "Flipper" television series Ric O'Barry.

Hollywood stars visit Havana amid U.S.-Cuba thaw

HAVANA (Reuters) - Hollywood came to Havana on Thursday as Cuban writers and artists gave an award to Benicio del Toro, star of the 2008 movie "Che," in a ceremony attended by fellow actors Bill Murray, Robert Duvall and James Caan. Murray stole the show when he improvised a version of the song "As Time Goes By," then jokingly passed around a hat, asking for money.

Q&A: Juliette Lewis pushes to the limit with new band

NEW YORK (Billboard) - An actress of startling range, Juliette Lewis has released an EP and two albums since 2003 with her band the Licks. Citing a desire to strike out in new directions, Lewis disbanded the group in 2009, forming the New Romantiques soon after. The resulting album, "Terra Incognita," produced by The Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, is exhilarating and exhausting -- spacey, Latin-tinged, tribal, grungy, droney, occasionally bluesy and even, just for a second, a little country. The sonic variance, though, is anchored by Lewis' gravelly, brazen yowl, which sounds like Patti Smith one minute and Kim Deal the next. Billboard caught up with Lewis by phone when she was in central Italy in the middle of a European tour.

Pocono Raceway

Pocono Raceway president continues family tradition.

LONG POND, Pa. - Brandon Igdalsky reveres the ground where his grandparents, Joe and Rose Mattioli, built Pocono Raceway.

That devotion, and his passion as an avid gardener, inspired the third-year track president to spearhead a green initiative that will leave his footprint on the family business.

"It was a great vote of confidence that my grandfather would have the faith in me to put projects like this together," Igdalsky said after Friday's announcement, detailing how Pocono Raceway will embark on the biggest renewable-energy stadium program in the world.

By building a solar-panel farm on about 25 acres of wooded land adjacent to the track, Pocono Raceway expects to produce three megawatts of electricity per year - enough to power the speedway and sell off the excess to the local grid. According to Igdalsky, the track's electrical self-reliance will "lower carbon dioxide emissions by 5,100 tons" every year.

"I spent eight months working on this project, so it's something I'm particularly proud of," Igdalsky said. "When it comes to fruition, it will be my first big contribution to this company."

The Mattioli clan braved a steady rain to take part in the ceremonial groundbreaking, including "Doc," the 84-year-old patriarch who has been confined to a wheelchair since his near-fatal bout of pneumonia a year and a half ago.

"We think this is a good investment as well as a good legacy for my children and grandchildren," Doc Mattioli said.

Despite the dreary weather that soaked his blue sport coat, Igdalsky was all smiles.

Twenty years after kick-starting his career at the track by picking up garbage following a race, the 33-year-old was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with energy experts and government officials for a historic photo opportunity.

"I've done it all - worked in every department of this facility, learning everything from the ground up," said Igdalsky, the father of 5-year-old twin girls. "I'm going to roll up my sleeves and do whatever's got to be done.

"I knew that I'd be [working] here, but I had no idea I'd be in this position at my age. I'm grateful for it, I'm having a good time, and I will do my best to follow in my grandparents' footsteps to keep their hopes and dreams alive."

"He's well-trained," Rose Mattioli said with a laugh.

With five of her grandchildren and all three of her children working in some capacity at the track, Rose Mattioli is thankful for the chance to share her passion with so many loved ones.

"We've been very fortunate in that our entire family loves racing," she said. "And maybe more important, we love the business of racing."

Rose Mattioli is quick to point out that her husband is still the boss - "his mind is still sharp as a tack" - and that the executive board (consisting of Doc, Rose, and their children Marilou, Joseph, and Michele) has "final say on everything."

Among the more important decisions was the choice of Igdalsky as track president.

"We felt that Brandon could handle it. He's smart and very knowledgeable about racing," Rose Mattioli said.

"Brandon is impetuous, and he'd like to set the world on fire. We just thought he would be a good person to head us for the while and see how it goes. So far, he's done a fine job. Every once in a while he comes up with ideas - you know with kids you hear, 'We've got to do this, Dad; we've got to do that, Dad.' When we sit and talk, we explain why it might or might not be a good idea, and he gets a little annoyed with us once in a while."

One idea that Igdalsky would like to pursue - and it has been discussed by the track's executive board - is to beef up Pocono's schedule with another race, either involving the NASCAR Truck or Nationwide circuits or an IndyCar Series event.

"I'd love to see IndyCar come back here, and we do get a lot of letters from fans pleading for a race," Igdalsky said. "I realize the reason Pocono Raceway is here was the [initial] association with open-wheel racing," noting that the first 500-mile race on the track's 2.5-mile tri-oval in 1971 featured Indy cars.

Rose Mattioli echoed her grandson's sentiment. "I still get a special thrill when I hear those [open-wheel] cars," she said. "That's where I learned about racing."

Igdalsky envisions "bigger and better" things in the future of Pocono Raceway. And whether it involves adding races or upgrading the facility, the inspiration is heartfelt.

"Our grandparents got it to this point," he said. "Now, it's up to the rest of us to keep it growing."

New Delhi, Aug 2, 2009: Why cop Justin Barrett called Prof. Gates porch monkey? Justin Barret's email has created a racial storm unseen in recent days.

He had called Harvard Professor “banana-eating jungle monkey” in an email that he wrote recently.

In the meantime Justin Barret has been suspended for calling Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates a “banana-eating jungle monkey”. “This type of venomous rhetoric is severely damaging,” Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis declared Thursday.

He went on to add, “We will not allow the unacceptable actions of one member to define who we are.”

Boston Police Commissioner also said that he has apologized to Gates on behalf of the department and they are now checking whether Barrett had any run-ins with blacks while on the job.

The mayor of Boston is working to get him fired and the National Guard has suspended him. For the sake of the safety of the citizens of Boston, I hope the mayor gets his wish.

Just two days ago with mugs of beer, President Barack Obama sat down with a black Harvard professor and a white police officer who had arrested him for a "friendly, thoughtful" chat to douse the racial firestorm lit by the incident.

"I have always believed that what brings us together is stronger than what pulls us apart," said America's first black president after the highly anticipated beer summit Thursday under the canopy of a magnolia tree at the edge of the White House's Rose Garden.

"I am confident that has happened here tonight, and I am hopeful that all of us are able to draw this positive lesson from this episode" he said after meeting the other players in the story - professor Henry Louis Gates Jr, who is also a friend of Obama, and Cambridge, Massachussets, police Sgt. James Crowley.

Bedouins

Pilot’s Remains Found in Iraq After 18 Years

WASHINGTON — Navy officials announced early Sunday that Marines in western Anbar Province, Iraq, had found remains that have been positively identified as those of an American fighter pilot shot down in the opening hours of the first Gulf War in 1991.

The Navy pilot, Michael Scott Speicher, was the only American missing in action from that war. Efforts to determine what happened to him after his F/A-18 Hornet was lost to ground fire on Jan. 17, 1991, had continued despite false rumors and scant information.

Conflicting reports from Iraq had, over the years, fueled speculation that the pilot, promoted to captain in the years he was missing, might have been taken into captivity either after parachuting from his jet or after a crash landing.

But the evidence in Iraq suggests he did not survive and was buried by Bedouins shortly after he was shot down.

An official statement released early Sunday said that Marines in western Iraq had received information from local citizens last month about the crash of an American jet and the burial of the pilot.

“One of these Iraqi citizens stated that they were present when Captain Speicher was found dead at the crash site by Bedouins and his remains buried,” the statement said. “The Iraqi citizens led U.S. Marines to the site.”

A search of the area last week recovered remains that included bones and skeletal fragments, which were flown to Dover Air Force Base for scientific examination.

Positive identification was made by visual and radiographical comparisons of Captain Speicher’s dental records with the jawbone recovered at the site.

“Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be,” said Admiral Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations, in a statement. “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Captain Speicher and his family for the sacrifice they have made for our nation and the example of strength they have set for all of us.”

Although the dental records confirmed the identity of the dead pilot, further DNA tests will be conducted to compare the remains with samples previously provided by family members, the statement said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Speicher’s family for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country,” said Ray Mabus, secretary of the Navy, in a statement. “I am also extremely grateful to all those who have worked so tirelessly over the last 18 years to bring Captain Speicher home.”

After the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the collapse of the Saddam Hussein government, a joint team from the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency sifted through captured documents, interrogated prisoners of war and searched possible crash sites to try to determine Captain Speicher’s fate.

Defense Department officials had been skeptical about reports that Captain Speicher was alive. Some of those reports were haunting, including one story that his initials or name had been found scratched into the wall of a cell of an Iraqi prison.

A crash site had been identified by as early as 1993, when a group of Qataris that had been on a hunting holiday in remote west-central Iraq handed over some materials they found that later were identified as coming from his fighter.

In December 1995, the United States, working through the International Committee of the Red Cross, was able to send a team to the crash site to investigate. They found no ejection seat and no signs of a body or bones. More www.nytimes.com/

Nissan Leaf

Nissan unveils zero-emission hatchback "Leaf"

YOKOHAMA, Japan (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co took the wraps off its much-awaited electric car on Sunday, naming the hatchback "Leaf" and taking a step toward its goal of leading the industry in the zero-emissions field.

Japan's No.3 automaker and its French partner, Renault SA, have been the most aggressive proponents of pure electric vehicles in the auto industry, announcing plans to mass-market the clean but expensive cars globally in 2012.

Nissan will begin selling the first Leaf cars in the United States, Japan and Europe toward the end of 2010, adding two more models soon after. It expects production to start with around 200,000 units a year at the global roll-out in 2012.

Twinning the car's unveiling with the inauguration of Nissan's new global headquarters in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn drove up to a stage in a sky-blue Leaf prototype, carrying former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and two other guests to greet a throng of journalists who made the trip from all over the world.

"We celebrate today the start of a new chapter of our company's life," Ghosn said.

Nissan is returning to the port city of Yokohama, where it was founded in 1933, after being based in Tokyo's posh Ginza district for the last 41 years.

Hit by sliding vehicle sales worldwide since the financial crisis hit last year, Nissan has suspended its goals set under a mid-term business plan, with the exception of its aggressive push into the electric car business.

With oil prices topping $60 even in a recession and environmental regulations tightening all the time, Ghosn said he was optimistic about electric vehicles entering the mainstream, expecting them to represent one in 10 new cars globally by 2020.

"We are seeing electric cars not as a niche car but as a mass-market car," he told reporters after the inauguration.

"The big problem is going to be (production) capacity."

Ghosn described the Leaf as a "powerful car, like having a turbo" charger except with no delay in response since there is no gear shift. He stressed that despite the growing popularity of gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles in some markets, they remained a niche with less than 2 percent of the global market.

BACKTRACKING ON HYBRID SKEPTICISM?

Other automakers such as Toyota Motor Corp and Volkswagen AG have also announced plans to launch electric cars in the next several years, but they say it could take decades for the vehicles to spread due to their high cost, limited driving range and long charging times with the current battery technology.

Nissan did not announce pricing for the five-seater Leaf, but Ghosn said the price, without the expensive lithium-ion battery that Nissan is considering leasing, would be within the range of a comparable gasoline-engine car.

Nissan's Leaf has a top speed of over 140 km/hour (76 mph) and a cruising range of at least 160 km (100 miles) -- a distance that covers the needs of 80 percent of the world's drivers, according to Nissan.  More www.reuters.com

Ap Economic Stress Index

Michigan 2nd-worst state on economic stress index

Foreclosures remain stubbornly high, budget shortfalls are forcing state workers to take unpaid days off and thousands of workers tied to the domestic automakers are anxious about how they’ll fare with the refashioned Chrysler LLC and General Motors Co. out of bankruptcy.

The bleak truth, as President Barack Obama noted during a visit to Michigan this month, is that many of the hundreds of thousands of auto jobs lost over the past nine years simply “won’t be coming back.”

Michigan was second only to California in May according to the Associated Press Economic Stress Index, which combines three indicators — unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcies — to gauge how the recession is affecting more than 3,000 counties in the United States. The higher the index’s number, the worse the impact.

A county is considered stressed when its score tops 11. Nationwide, 36% of counties were at that level or higher. In Michigan, just three of its 83 counties were below that limit. Many — including Wayne County, home to Detroit, and Genesee County, which includes Flint — had scores over 20.

With 740,000 people in Michigan out of work, more people are losing their homes each month and there’s little demand from buyers. The state has the nation’s seventh-highest foreclosure rate, with more than 13,600 filings in June, according to RealtyTrac Inc. Housing prices in the Detroit area have fallen 24% in the past year, under the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index, and have dropped 56% since late 2005.

“No other state has lost as many jobs, and lost them so quickly and apparently so permanently,” says East Lansing economist Patrick Anderson, who doesn’t see Michigan’s economy turning around until employment begins to rise — something that might not happen until late next year.

“People need to have jobs and good prospects of employment before they can borrow money, before they can start businesses and before they can pay their bills,” he said.

Oasis Tower One Fort Myers

The Oasis Towers condos in Southwest Florida have a single family living among 32 stories with 300 condos.

The one family living in the Oasis Towers I condos is the Vangelakos family.

The Oasis Towers were one of five towers to be built in Ft. Myers, Florida. Then the market crashed and only two towers were built.

The Vangelakos family moved into the Oasis Tower I condo units. But they were the only ones who were unable to sell or move to the Oasis Tower II when construction was halted.

Now the Oasis Towers Condo has become and island of silence in the daytime and darkness at night.

Victor Vangelakos, 45, paid $430,000 for a unit in the 32-story Oasis Tower I condo for a vacation getaway and eventually retire. He was unable to work out a deal with his lender to swap his Condo in Oasis Tower II.

Now he wants the developer of the Oasis Tower Condo area to refund his money.

US Marshals seize sanitizer for bacteria problems

WASHINGTON — Officers with the U.S. Marshals Service have seized all skin sanitizers and skin protectants, including ingredients and components, at Clarcon Biological Chemistry Laboratory's facility in Roy, Utah, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The FDA also warned the public Saturday not to use any Clarcon products because they contain harmful bacteria and are promoted as antimicrobial agents that claim to treat open wounds, damaged skin, and protect against various infectious diseases. No cases have been reported to the FDA.

Clarcon voluntarily recalled the affected products, marketed under several different brand names, in June 2009, following an FDA inspection that revealed high levels of potentially disease-causing bacteria in the products.

The inspection also uncovered serious deviations from the FDA's regulations, including poor practices that permitted the contamination. The FDA's seizure of these products, along with their ingredients, occurred after Clarcon did not agree to promptly destroy them. The FDA said it is protecting the public by preventing these products from entering the marketplace.

"The FDA is committed to taking enforcement action against firms that do not manufacture drugs in accordance with our current good manufacturing practice requirements," said Deborah M. Autor, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Office of Compliance.

Clarcon produced and distributed over 800,000 bottles of these products in multiple regions of the country since 2007. Consumers should not use any Clarcon products and should dispose of them in their household trash.

Analyses of several samples of the topical antimicrobial skin sanitizer and skin protectant products revealed high levels of various bacteria. Some of these bacteria can cause opportunistic infections of the skin and underlying tissues. Such infections may need medical or surgical attention and may result in permanent damage, the FDA said.

clerks 2

Looking back at Kevin Smith’s Clerks, Kicking off our Kevin Smith retrospective, Carley looks back to the film that started it all: the majestic Clerks...

"There's a million fine looking women in the world, dude. But, they don't all bring you lasagne at work. Most of 'em just cheat on you." - Silent Bob

Of all the places to be introduced to the work of Kevin Smith, I got my first taste as a 17-year-old in a film studies class. How Smith would feel about being paraded in such academic quarters is up for debate, but the film I saw that day, Clerks, would mark me as a firm fan of his for many years to come.

Set over the course of a day, the plot is based around Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran), an employee of the Quick Stop convenience store who has been called in on his day off. When he arrives at the store, he finds the shutter locks have been jammed up with gum so is forced to put up a shoe polish painted sign assuring customers that the store is, in fact, open.

27 killed,Blast in Baghdad Mosques

BAGHDAD: A string of bomb attacks targeting Muslim worshippers as they emerged from mosques across Baghdad on Friday killed 27 people and wounded more than 50, security officials said.
The six apparently coordinated blasts occurred outside mosques and prayer centres in and around the capital, including one frequented by followers of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, they said.
The worst attack was in the north-eastern Baghdad district of Al-Shaab, where a car bomb killed 21 people and injured 35 others, an interior ministry official said.
In twin bombings at Diyala Bridge, 10 kilometres (six miles) south of Baghdad, four people were killed and seven wounded.
Attacks in Zafaraniyah and Kamaliyah neighbourhoods killed one person each and left six and three people wounded respectively. A separate attack in Al-Elam in western Baghdad injured four.
Violence has dropped markedly throughout Iraq in recent months, but attacks increased in the run-up to the US military pullback a month ago from urban centres, with 437 Iraqis killed in June — the highest death toll in 11 months.
Attacks remain particularly common in the capital Baghdad and the restive northern city of Mosul.

Shuttle Landing, astronauts eye Friday landing

Shuttle Landing, The multinational crew of the space shuttle Endeavour prepared to return to Earth on Friday, wrapping up a marathon mission to the International Space Station.
There was only a slight chance that rain showers near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center runway in Florida might force the seven-member crew to spend an extra day in orbit, according to forecasters.
“It’s time to come back,” said Endeavour commander Mark Polanski, as the astronauts prepared the ship for its high speed descent.
“We have accomplished our primary objectives successfully.”
Endeavour has two opportunities to touchdown Friday, at 10:48am (1448 GMT) and 12:22 pm (1622 GMT).
NASA said the shuttle crew was awakened at 2:03 am eastern daylight time (0603 GMT) by the song “Beautiful Day” performed by the band U2, ahead of the planned trip home.
Touchdown would end a long sojourn, during which the astronauts installed the final piece of Japan’s Kibo science laboratory and delivered spare parts crucial to the space station’s future operations.
The flight also saw a record number of astronauts aboard the 220-mile high orbital outpost, representing Europe, Japan, Canada Russia and the United States.
Inspections of the shuttle’s fragile heat shielding revealed no major damage after the long flight, according to Bryan Lunney, the NASA flight director, who will supervise landing operations from Mission Control.
“The vehicle is in great shape,” he said. Kibo, the largest and best equipped of the space station’s major experiment facilities, required three shuttle missions over 16 months to assemble.
Endeavour’s crew carried out the last of the construction by joining a new external experiment platform to Japan’s primary science enclosure and separate stowage module.
The long shuttle flight was punctuated by moments of drama and some humor.
Four of the astronauts conducted a record-tying five spacewalks, including one outing that had to be cut short when one of the astronauts registered higher than expected readings of carbon dioxide inside his space suit, in what proved to be a temporary setback.
The spacewalkers went on to replace a half-dozen batteries in the station’s oldest power storage module, ensuring electricity for crucial life support systems and science experiments as the orbital outpost ages.
American Tim Kopra, who launched aboard Endeavour, will stay at the space outpost at least until early September. He replaced Koichi Wakata, Japan’s first long-duration astronaut.

Money-troubled doctor found lifeline in Jackson

LOS ANGELES – Dr. Conrad Murray needed a big payday when he became Michael Jackson's personal physician last spring. The Las Vegas cardiologist owed at least $780,000 for settlements against his business, outstanding mortgage payments on his house, delinquent student loans, child support and credit cards. And that doesn't include the $68,000 the distributor of an energy drink says Murray, a one-time business associate, owes for skipping out on payments.Court records chronicling Murray's woes in Las Vegas, where authorities searched his home this week as part of their manslaughter investigation into Jackson's death, help explain why — beyond basking in a celebrity's aura — Murray might have jumped at the $150,000-a-month Jackson's promoter was prepared to pay him to keep the star healthy through a series of concerts in London.Murray hooked on with Jackson in May, as his bleak financial picture threatened to worsen. He already was under court orders to pay more than $363,000 for equipment for his heart clinic and $71,000 in student loans dating to the 1980s, a judgment that hit in April. Two lawsuits claiming he owes $240,000 more for unpaid equipment are pending in Nevada courts. And Murray had appeared unable or unwilling to settle more modest debts — a nearly $3,700 judgment for not paying child support and two recent credit card company claims totaling $2,600.Murray's 5,268-square-foot home near the 18th hole of a golf course offers no refuge — he's in "pre-foreclosure" after failing to make payments on his $1.66 million loan, records show. He stopped paying the $15,000-per-month mortgage in December and could lose the home by November, said Mary Hunt, the foreclosure officer handling the case for Stewart Title company. More in yahooo

Ask for more troops for Afghan war,US General

WASHINGTON - the general of the United States responsible for rotation around the war in Afghanistan is likely to recommend the crucial changes towards the United States and the operations of NATO, the civils servant military and others with the current of his next report/ratio indicated. These changes could include the additional troops of the United States in spite of the political head wind against more expansion of the war.As the Stanley McChrystal generator prepares its evaluation of the war, due the next month, the many civils servant and the foreigners of the United States informed with him which thinks propose that McChrystal requires American troops, probably including/understanding soldiers of navy, being added the next year. The civils servant and the advisers spoke about the state of anonymity because the report/ratio is not complete, and because the number of forces to be required is in flow. With the current of several people of the report/ratio informed that McChrystal could choose not to require an increase in the whole - an identification which it President Barack Obama and other advisers of the White House would not look at favorably on adding new numbers to us forces after having already agreed to amplify their rows by 21.000 troops earlier this year.McChrystal 'report/ratio of S contains a list of recommendations which were not released, but the soldiers and the agents of defense proposed that they identify deficits of the size and qualifications of the Afghan forces and recommend the additional trainers or others of the United States to help.An elder civil servant of the United States declared that the reasoning to need more than forces is attached to a strategy changed to release and hold of the provinces where the insurrectionists talibans run away themselves while they are eliminated elsewhere.McChrystal is likely also to recommend to rearrange some forces of NATO of the United States and to better meet a mission narrowed to protect the Afghan civilians and to deprive the insurrectionists of the essential support. The report/ratio was commissioned by the doors of secretary of Robert defense, that McChrystal sorted with the hand to take the bar of the operations of combat against the insurrectionists talibans whom the higher agents of defense conceded are stopped. Two of McChrystal 'advisers civil of S, Anthony Cordesman of the center for strategic studies and International and Stephen Biddle of the Council of the Foreign affairs, indicated this week when they expect a certain expansion of the troops. Some of the allies envisage to draw their troops at the house in the next years.Several of the specific recommendations undergo what the Pentagon calls has to charge with troops for analyzes, to identify if there are the sufficient troops available or adapted to work. One expects that McChrystal discusses this review and its greater evaluation with doors in two weeks following.Any request of additional us of the forces would require delicate discussions with the White House and the legislators. President Barack Obama approved an addition of surprised of 4.000 trainers of the United States earlier in spring, after his greater advertisement of 17.000 troops of combat, and the civils servant of administration and soldiers had announced that other additions were not very probable for now.The evaluations of the additional forces that McChrystal can require are extended from some thousand, such as a brigade number 4.000 to 5.000 and assigned to form the Afghan armed forces of beginner, up to 20.000 or more.Obama 'additions of S will bring the presence of the United States approximately to 68.000 towards the end of this year. It is the harshly double size of the force of the United States when Obama took the office, and although Afghanistan is now considered the nation the 's first priority military, the White House is deeply little laid out to continue to be added, or to fight a congress skeptic above the increase.McChrystal 'predecessor of S left us a request not filled of an addition roughly of 10.000 of the forces, and one had expected that Obama reviews which request close to the end of the year.McChrystal was encouraged by superiors to not evaluate the war abruptly and with the obstacle to require the troops, the money, or the equipment, and it knows that it has probably only one short period to make thus, the agents of defense and others in Washington and Afghanistan declared. To draw up the report/ratio, McChrystal collected approximately dozen soldiers and civil analysts of outside six weeks ago and sent them on an intensive journey of report by Afghanistan. The work finished by group last week. One of the report/ratio 'authors of S.A. indicated that the group identified some problems of basic organization with the manner that the combat is divided among the United States, NATO and the forces Afghan. One of truths challenges which the McChrystal generator will have is that up to this point the war is fought like four separate combat: north, is, western and southern, said Andrew Exum, a specialist in against-insurrection and blogger in the center for a new American safety. We try to think holistique.Report/ratio, is conceived to describe situation on the ground as we saw, speak mission, which it would mean to achieve the mission and then a little about the resources and of the risks that, Exum said.Speaking for, Exum indicated faces of McChrystal a challenge much broader than providing enough troops and resources. Operational Culture of the war must change says it to mean shift starting from military operation and of traditional procedures. Our efforts in this war will succeed or fail based on us of reports/ratios 'about able building with our, Afghan of associated with each level Exum saidHim 's very difficult to establish these associations by behind a MRAP, it indicated, to be referred tank-like the carriers of troop which help to protect from the soldiers of the United States against bombs of roadside. There 's going to have to be a true acceptance of risk with which the United States and other allied forces could not feel comfortable.

Brazil police rule Gatti’s death suicide

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP)—Boxer Arturo Gatti’s death was ruled a suicide by police Thursday and his wife, once suspected of killing the former champion, was released from jail.Investigator Paulo Alberes told The Associated Press authorities decided Gatti killed himself on July 11 while at a seaside resort in northeastern Brazil.Asked if police had determined the case was a suicide, Alberes said, “Yes.” He offered no other details, though a judge—in ordering the release of Gatti’s wife—cited the police investigation and wrote that “the victim took his own life, committing suicide by hanging.”The boxer’s widow, 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues, said in a phone interview as she walked out of jail she thinks Gatti may have killed himself because he was afraid she was going to leave him after a violent disagreement in public the night before his death.“We had an argument in the street. Then he pushed me and I hurt myself. I believe that when we got home and he saw that he hurt me, he thought I would leave him, that I would tell him to just let me go, that I would separate from him,” Rodrigues said. “He did that in a moment of weakness. He was drunk, maybe he didn’t know what he was doing, maybe he thought I would leave him the next day.”A day after the 37-year-old Gatti was found dead, police said that Rodrigues had strangled him with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept.
But police began to back off the accusation about a week later after a coroner’s report said Gatti may have killed himself since he was found “suspended and hanged.” The autopsy report didn’t exclude the possibility he was slain, but said he also could have died in an unexplained accident, or could have committed suicide.“The police investigation concluded that Arturo killed himself,” said Celio Avelino, Rodrigues’ attorney. “I’ve said before it would have been impossible for her to suspend and hang a man of that size.”Judge Ildete Verissimo de Lima ordered the immediate release of Rodrigues after receiving the police report. The judge wrote that police informed the court “the detention of the suspect was no longer needed” since the investigation “excludes the possibility of murder.”Rodrigues said her priority was to see the 10-month-old son she had with Gatti, grieve for her husband and clear her name—though some of Gatti’s friends said they still suspect her.“All of my plans and dreams involved Arturo. I haven’t been able to think of anything beyond that,” she said. “My plan now is to stay with my son, my father, mom and sister, nothing more than this.”Gatti’s body was discovered in the apartment he was renting with Rodrigues in the resort town of Porto de Galinhas. They arrived there a few days before for a second honeymoon. The couple brought their son, who was unhurt and is in the care of Rodrigues’ family in Brazil. From the accounts of Gatti’s family and friends, the two-year marriage with Rodrigues was tumultuous.“She was yelling all the time, they were always fighting and she’d say, ‘I’m going to kill you!’ when they fought,” Gatti’s mother, Ida, said in a telephone interview from Montreal shortly after her son’s death.According to records at the Court of Quebec’s criminal and penal division, Gatti was charged on April 16 for violating a restraining order that had been filed against him. Records didn’t indicate who filed the restraining order, but Gatti’s mother confirmed that it was Rodrigues who had taken one out against him. She offered no other details.Rodrigues stressed her innocence and defended her relationship with Gatti.“There is no one who can doubt my love for Arturo or his for me. Arturo got married at 34 years of age, he was never married before, and this demonstrates the love that he had for me,” Rodrigues said. “I was the only wife of Arturo and I want my good name back. Not only just for me, but out of respect for my husband and my son.”Gatti, who captured two world titles in his 16-year pro career, retired in 2007 with a record of 40-9.Gatti’s family and friends expressed disbelief that the boxer could have killed himself. “It doesn’t make any sense,” said Howard Grant, a friend and fellow boxer in Gatti’s adopted hometown of Montreal. That sentiment was evident at a memorial Mass in northern New Jersey, where Gatti honed his craft, his brother said the family may try to have Arturo’s body exhumed and have an autopsy conducted in Canada.Matchmaker Carl Moretti remembered Gatti as the kind of person that made boxing industry insiders forget the old axiom about never falling in love with a fighter.“It’s safe to say that every one of us forgot that rule when it came to Arturo Gatti,” Moretti said.Associated Press Writers Tales Azzoni in Sao Paulo and Amy Luft in Montreal contributed to this report.
